John King – Co-founder
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. King has won and managed over $5 MM in contracts and investment from Fortune 500 utility companies, government agencies and private investors. He is lead inventor of the company’s novel plastic solar concentrator technology. Prior to Hyperlight, Mr. King was an architect of the $3.2 BB California Solar Initiative’s (CSI’s) online rebate system. He also authored a seminal paper, now referenced in Wikipedia’s solar power entry, predicting the tectonic shift in business models in solar photovoltaic from a traditional ownership structure to a power purchase agreement structure. Mr. King holds 16 issued U.S. and international patents and two pending U.S. patents. He holds an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, an M.S. from UC Irvine and a B.S. from Caltech.

Greg Mungas
Greg Mungas – Chief Technical Officer

Mr. Mungas has a broad and deep background in new technology development and commercialization to address fundamental business and technical challenges in energy and aerospace. He has been responsible for creating, managing and/or providing technical oversight for just over $24 MM in peer-reviewed government awarded grants and private and commercial equity investments. He is a Member of the Leadership Council of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) and received the 2008 Reagan Presidential Commission the 2007 U.S. Congressional Order of Merit, 2006 U.S. Congressional Medal of Distinction. He holds nine issued and 51 pending U.S. and international patents, has six peer-reviewed journal publications, and 69 conference publications and journal abstracts. Mr. Mungas holds a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Joel Balbien

Dr. Balbien is a seasoned interim and full time CFO and Audit Committee Director for emerging high technology companies developing novel cleantech, bio and information technologies. Dr. Balbien has 3 decades of broad industry experience raising capital, building strategic partnerships, and negotiating technology licenses, and mergers, and acquisitions. He’s an experienced advisor with respect to go-to-market-strategy, product roadmap, and economic and financial modeling. Dr. Balbien is a named inventor on one pending U.S. patent. He holds a Ph.D. in Microeconomics/Operations Research from Caltech and a B.S. from UCSD.

He is lead inventor of Hyperlight Energy’s novel plastic solar concentrator technology.  Prior to Hyperlight, Mr. King was an architect of the $3.2 BB California Solar Initiative’s (CSI’s) online rebate system.  In 2007, he also authored a seminal paper, now referenced in Wikipedia’s solar power entry, predicting the tectonic shift in business models in solar photovoltaic from a traditional ownership structure to a power purchase agreement structure.  Mr. King is honored to serve on the Selection Committee for EvoNexus, San Diego’s premier start-up incubator. He holds 16 issued U.S. and international patents.  He holds an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, an M.S. from UC Irvine and a B.S. from Caltech.

Mr. Cunningham is a proven leader with over a decade of executive consulting track record in executive EPC and operations for client companies. He has a successful, unique history of profitably capturing and executing multimillion dollar complex projects to accel client success. Mr. Cunningham focuses on engineering, procurement, construction, and operations management. His core principles are integrity, discipline, and teamwork.

Mr. Gershen has been a leading renewables executive since 2001. As founder and president of Encore BioRenewables, a clean-tech sustainable products company, Joe collaborates with pioneers and technical innovators in the renewables and recycling space to promote a zero waste, carbon-neutral future. He also co-founded Forge Ventures, a clean-tech consultancy focused on successful commercialization of early stage companies. Joe sits on the California Energy Commission’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program Advisory Committee, regularly working with clients and partners in the energy industry to provide business development, supply chain, logistics, and CRM solutions for companies in the emerging carbon economy. Joe co-founded the California Advanced Biofuels Alliance, the state industry trade association, and currently serves as its Vice Chair.
